II BRICS+ Universities Rector's Forum Held in Brazil
From June 5 to 7, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, played host to the II BRICS+ Universities Rector's Forum alongside the Forum of the League of Universities of Brazil, Russia, and Belarus.
The event unfolded at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and were supported by the National Association of Directors of Federal Higher Education Institutions (ANDIFES), the Forum of Rectors of Public Educational Institutions of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FRIPERJ), the Federal Government of Brazil, the City of Rio de Janeiro, the Funding Authority for Studies and Projects (FINEP), and the Carlos Chagas Filho Foundation for Research Support of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ).
Bringing together over 150 delegates from top BRICS+ universities, the forum sparked discussions on key global challenges. Participants explored the future of artificial intelligence and digital economy, delved into prospects for green energy and sustainable development, examined new approaches to health protection and language policy, and discussed the role of science in combating poverty and inequality. The forum sessions also highlighted avenues for standardising science and education to create a unified technological space.
Representing HSE University at both forum was Valeriia Gorbacheva, Head of the Multilateral Strategic Projects Office and Deputy Head of the BRICS Expert Council-Russia.
In her presentation, she highlighted HSE University’s active and upcoming collaborations with Brazilian academic institutions. Ms Gorbacheva emphasised that HSE University has already signed several agreements with leading institutions in Brazil, including collaborative research initiatives and a master's programme with the University of Campinas. She also spotlighted the Russia-Brazil International Partners' Day hosted by HSE University in 2024, which marked the first Brazilian academic and scientific mission to Russia. Supported by the Brazilian Embassy, the event brought together rectors and presidents from 11 top Brazilian universities. Strengthening ties with Brazil’s academic and research institutions remains a key priority in HSE University’s international strategy.
The I BRICS Universities Rector's Forum took place in Moscow in October 2024 during Russia’s Chairship, attracting over 250 university leaders and representatives from the BRICS nations.
