BRICS Leaders' Presence at Victory Day Parade Signals Solidarity with Russia and Commitment to Multipolar World Order
Dmitry Suslov, Deputy Director of the Centre for Comprehensive European and International Studies at HSE University, underscored the profound symbolism of BRICS leaders attending the Victory Day Parade in Moscow. Their participation not only affirmed the BRICS nations' rejection of Western attempts to isolate Russia but also showcased the group as the backbone and vanguard of the Global Majority.
Dmitry Suslov believes that one of BRICS' essential roles is to harmonise the foreign policy stances of its members and provide mutual support on critical world order issues. According to the BRICS nations, the foundation of this world order lies in the United Nations and the principles enshrined in its Charter. The group members remain steadfast in defending the vital aspect of the post-World War II order — the UN's central role in global affairs — while opposing the global dominance of individual nations.
The presence of BRICS leaders in Moscow in May 2025, including heads of state from the group's new members, reaffirmed Russia's status as a key player in the international arena. It demonstrated that all efforts to isolate Russia lack backing from a majority of countries worldwide. Despite potential differences on specific foreign policy aspects, the BRICS nations stand united against the strategy of containing Russia.
The bilateral meetings of BRICS leaders with the President of Russia played a pivotal role in reinforcing ties within the group. Negotiations with heads of state, including the leaders of China, Brazil, and Egypt, significantly bolstered bilateral relations and contributed to enhancing intra-BRICS collaboration.
The expert also spotlighted the Russia-China talks that unfolded during the Victory Day celebrations. The discussions between Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, along with the joint documents endorsed, underscored the robust strategic partnership, mutual trust, and foreign policy alignment between the two nations. This is especially noteworthy amid the United States' efforts to undermine the partnership between Moscow and Beijing. The two nations made it clear that such attempts are destined to fail.
Dmitry Suslov emphasised that BRICS continues to demonstrate stability, independence, and a shared commitment to establishing a fair, multipolar world order grounded in international law and the UN's central authority.
